Giving Thanks: How ICS Fosters a Culture of Gratitude

Most of us can point to one moment at work when a small “thank you” changed everything: a quick message after a long week, a teammate noticing a detail you were sure would go unseen, or a manager acknowledging your contributions to a tough project. These moments stay with us. Harvard Business Review has highlighted that people are more likely to stay at their current employer and keep giving their best when they feel valued, respected, and trusted at work.

It’s not surprising. In the middle of deadlines, renewals, back-to-back meetings, and everything else that fills our calendars, feeling valued helps to cut through the noise and provide a sense of purpose. As we head into Thanksgiving, it’s a good time to pause and look at how gratitude shapes our culture at ICS and why it matters more than we sometimes realize.

Build a Culture of Gratitude

ICS is a people-first company. Captives are what we do best, and behind every analysis, renewal, and strategy discussion there’s a relationship based on trust.

Gratitude strengthens that trust. It creates an environment where teammates feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions, or stepping in when something needs attention. It also helps us build stronger connections with clients and broker partners, who feel the impact of our culture just as much as we do internally.

Unlike other perks or policies, gratitude rarely requires a budget line. It just needs intentionality. Here are a few ways gratitude shows up at ICS and beyond. These are not corporate mandates but rather real habits that make a difference in ICS’s culture.

  1. Keep it simple.

A meaningful thank you doesn’t need to be polished. A message that takes 10 seconds to write can change the entire tone of someone’s day. The trick is to say it when you feel it, not only when it’s expected.

  1. Let it happen outside of “official” moments.

Recognition during reviews or big milestones is great, but gratitude lands differently when it shows up in ordinary moments. Some ICS teams start meetings with quick shout-outs. Others recognize peers with Applause points that can be redeemed for gifts. These rituals are small, but they create a rhythm of appreciation.

  1. Peer-to-peer appreciation matters just as much as leadership recognition.

People notice when a teammate saves them time, catches an error, or offers training and support. Gratitude between peers builds trust, especially in cross-department work where collaboration is essential.

  1. Connect gratitude to purpose.

When we volunteer, mentor, and give back together, it reinforces the idea that our work matters beyond the office. This creates a sense of purpose which naturally deepens gratitude – both for what we have and for who we work alongside.

  1. Be specific.

Vague recognition often feels generic. Specific gratitude feels sincere. Compare: “Nice job today.” vs. “Thank you for double-checking that loss run before it went out. You prevented a headache for everyone.”

  1. Don’t forget those outside the building.

Clients, broker partners, and carriers all play a role in our success. A short note during renewal season or after a good meeting can strengthen partnerships more than we realize. Gratitude is a universal language.

  1. Celebrate effort, not perfection.

Things don’t always go as planned. But effort, problem-solving, and resilience deserve thanks just as much as outcomes do. A strong culture of gratitude acknowledges the whole process, not just the final product.

Gratitude Grows When Shared

Gratitude makes work feel more human. It reminds us that we’re not just managing numbers, projects, or timelines – we’re collaborating with real people who care deeply about what they do. As we get close to Thanksgiving, here’s a simple challenge: Thank one person at ICS, at your company, or in your professional circle this week. Make it specific and make it real. And if you’re willing, keep it going. Gratitude spreads quickly. It shifts team cultures in small but meaningful ways. It strengthens client relationships. It builds community. At ICS, we’ve always believed that people make the difference. Gratitude simply helps us show it.

Let’s continue to do business boldly together, and let’s be thankful together, too.
